How We Name Our Bikes

We use a simple naming convention to name our bikes. An M6L, for example, has an M Type handlebar, is a 6 speed, and is equipped with mudguards. Continue reading to discover which spec best suits your needs.

Choose your Handlebar

Our three handlebar types offer different riding positions for varying heights of rider and styles of riding.

If you’re taller, you generally want your seat and handlebars higher up, if you’re on the shorter side you generally want your seat and handlebars lower.

Everyone will sit on a bike slightly differently, but if you want a sportier posture you’ll want your handle bars lower and if you want a more relaxed posture you’ll want your handle bars higher.

S Type:

Shorter riders will find this a good all round position and taller riders will be in a lower, sporty ride position, which may be preferable if the rider is used to a road bike.

M Type:

Our classic handlebar shape, which for most riders provides an all round, neutral position. Shorter riders will find this offers a more upright, leisurely position and taller riders will find this still gives a slightly sporty position.

H Type:

Our classic handlebar shape, at an elevated height. Taller riders will find this offers a more neutral position and anyone shorter will feel close to upright, similar in style to a traditional Dutch bike.

Choose your Gears

With 4 basic options, the gearing can be tailored to suite the rider and terrain. From first time commuter to scaling alpine climbs, there is a gearing option for everyone.

1 Speed:

Light and simple – best suited to flat city riding.

2 Speed:

One gear for hills and setting-off from the traffic lights, one for cruising. Flexible and lightweight, the extra gear adds just 188g to the overall weight of the bike.

3 Speed:

A robust enclosed hub gear, a great choice for everyday cycling. The 3 speed adds 738g to the weight of the bike.

6 Speed:

The ultimate all-rounder, for those who wish to take longer rides and challenging inclines. The 6 speed option is 920g heavier than the single speed, so if you’re looking for a lighter bike and won’t be tackling hills, perhaps consider fewer gears.

Mudguards or Rack

E Version:

No mudguards or rack. Going without mudguards looks good and is also the lightest and least expensive option.

L Version:

Saddle Height

Standard:

For an inside leg of 84cm / 33” and under. Our lightest and shortest seatpost.

Extended:

For and inside leg of 84 - 89cm / 33”-35”. Offers an additional 60mm of elevation but leaves the saddle correspondingly higher when folded.

N.B anyone with a smaller inside leg measurement can still select this option and use at a lower setting.

Telescopic:

For an inside leg of over 90cm / 35”. Offers up to 175mm more elevation than a standard post but the saddle only projects 20mm above the folded package.

N.B anyone with a smaller inside leg measurement can still select this option and use at a lower setting.

Please note that all available bikes come with Extended seatpost. If you require a different saddle height, it can be purchased separately from the bike Essentials available at Brompton.com.

Other adjustments for size and fit

Beyond all the above options, other aspects will help make sure the fit is just right. The Pentaclip on the saddle allows you to find a riding position that is both comfortable for you and ergonomically correct; elongating or compacting the reach, as preferred. Our brake levers can be adjusted to suit all hand sizes, and the saddle height insert means you can tailor your saddle height to the millimetre.
